The Etruscan Pyramid of Bomarzo, an excursion off the usual circuits
Bomarzo is best known for the Park of Monsters. Less famous, and for that reason more interesting, are the rock-cut sites in the woods around the village, including the so-called Etruscan Pyramid: a structure carved directly into volcanic tuff whose origin and purpose are still debated.
What the Etruscan Pyramid is
It isn’t a pyramid in the Egyptian sense. It’s a man-made tuff formation, with steps, channels and precisely cut surfaces, set in the woods a few kilometres from Bomarzo.
An Etruscan origin is likely but not definitively proven. Some theories point to a place of worship, others to an astronomical or land-orientation structure.
That uncertainty is part of what makes the place so compelling.
The Pyramid is one of the most striking monuments in a wider network of rock-cut sites that defines the Bomarzo area.
How to get there
About 35-40 km from Montefiascone, under an hour by car. The site is reached on foot from the trailhead: the walk is short and not technically demanding, suitable for anyone reasonably fit for a walk through the woods.
It’s worth checking access conditions and trail conditions before setting out, especially in autumn or after heavy rain.
The walk
The trail crosses a wood of oak and chestnut trees. The walk itself is worth the trip: the rugged landscape of the Tuscia, with its tuff formations and dense vegetation, feels very different from what you see by the lake or in the villages.
The structure, when it appears through the trees, is striking in scale. Up close, the marks of human work are clear and precise.
Worth pairing with the Park of Monsters
The Sacred Wood of Bomarzo, the Park of Monsters, is just a few kilometres away. The two are different but complementary experiences: the park is easy to visit even with young children and takes about two hours, while the Pyramid suits those who enjoy walking and have an interest in history and archaeology.
Combining both in a single day is possible if you start in the morning.
A typical day from Montefiascone
Morning departure for the Etruscan Pyramid, back for lunch in Bomarzo or nearby, afternoon at the Park of Monsters. Return to AuraVista in the evening.
It’s a full day, the kind of day that makes a two-night stay worthwhile rather than one. Guests arriving Friday evening and leaving Sunday morning have just enough time to fit it all in without rushing.
