Civita di Bagnoregio, how to visit it without regrets
Civita di Bagnoregio has appeared on every “most beautiful villages in Italy” list for at least twenty years. The problem with those lists is they never tell you what it’s actually like showing up at eleven on a July morning.
This guide is here to help you avoid that.
What is Civita di Bagnoregio
Civita is a village built on a plateau of tufa rock that erosion is slowly wearing away. Connected to the outside world by a single pedestrian bridge, it’s home to only a handful of permanent residents, yet draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
When to go
he short answer: early morning, ideally outside July and August.
Before ten o’clock, in spring or autumn, Civita is still the place you’ve seen in photographs: quiet, faintly suspended in time, with cats crossing the alleys as if they still owned the place.
After eleven during peak season, it turns into a corridor of people photographing themselves in front of the same three viewpoints..
How to get there
From Montefiascone it’s about 25 km, half an hour by car. You arrive in Bagnoregio, park (there are paid car parks in town), and reach the bridge on foot, about a 10-minute walk. The entry ticket for the bridge is paid at the entrance.
With a GPS: search for “Civita di Bagnoregio ponte pedonale.”
What to see
The village is small: half an hour and you’ve seen it all. The Church of San Donato on the piazza, the tufa-stone alleys, the lookout points over the Valle dei Calanchi.
The Calanchi are the real surprise for anyone who doesn’t already know them: a moon-like landscape of eroded clay surrounding the plateau. Seen from above at sunset, it’s something that’s hard to forget.
A full day out
Civita alone takes about two hours, three if you’re taking your time. It’s worth pairing with something else on the same day.
From Montefiascone, a practical plan: head out early for Civita, visit through to lunchtime, then move on to Orvieto, 20 km from Bagnoregio, for the afternoon and dinner. Back at AuraVista in the evening.
